obama, racism, american history x

with all the current fervor over reverend wright, obama’s minister, and the resulting “discussions” on racism… they brought the movie american history X to mind.  coincidentally it came on tv just a few days ago, as well.  listening to ed norton’s speech at the dinner table is so reminiscent of crap being spewed by those who dislike obama and wright, by extension, that i have to wonder if they didn’t have this speech memorized.

how sad that we’ve really not come further than this.

tired.

quote for the day: “as a girl, you see the world like a giant candy store, filled with sweet candy and such…but one day you look around and see a prison…and you’re on death row.”—the good girl

somewhere out there is a society where racism and bigotry aren’t mainstream.  somewhere out there is a society that realizes that all people are created equal.  that humans are not independent of one another, but must rely on one another.  that for a society to function properly, everyone must be treated fairly.  that a society is only as successful as it’s lowest denominator.  that it is made up of people, not policies.  that while structure and rules are necessary, there are exceptions.  that knowledge is essential for all.  that greed isn’t something to be commended.  that the society itself deserves to be invested in more than bombs and other means of war.  that the loss of hope is catastrophic, psychologically, emotionally, monetarily.

somewhere.

just not here.

not ever.

we lack the will.  we’re too greedy.  people are a commodity.  just another item on the shelf.  we are valued not for who ~we~ are, but for our ability to be swayed.  to be marketed, to be marketed to.  and we let it happen.  over and over again.

and i’m tired.

i’m tired of seeing people close to me (7 now) commit suicide because they never received adequate mental health care.  i’m tired of seeing women dying at horrific rates from breast cancer.  i’m tired of friends losing their health coverage because they’ve used their health coverage.  i’m tired of seeing people trying to improve their lives be hampered by the thought of losing medicaid which provides them the medications necessary TO improve their lives.

and to john, i’m sorry.  i’m sorry that society failed you.  i’m sorry that we, your friends, failed you.  much love to you and your family.  the bonham wouldn’t have been the same without you.

mccain for president?

first, i completely understand why john mccain might feel the way he does, having been a prisoner of war and having been tortured.  in his shoes, i’m sure i’d be subjective in my feelings as well.  i’d like to think that i’d be able to overcome the issues, but i’m in no way fooling myself, i probably wouldn’t be able to.  that said… i find it completely unacceptable that we could possibly have a president who would make these types of statements.  the president is required to represent all of the nation.  our nation includes asians who find the term “gooks” offensive, as they should.  he’s also required to deal with foreign entities in a rational, objective manner, which this type of thing brings into question… “could he?”

more on mccain’s statement:

``I hate the gooks,’’ McCain said yesterday in response to a question from reporters aboard his campaign bus. ``I will hate them as long as I live.’’

~busy~, but collection of good links anyways

but collecting links.  try these:

atheistic forum —some good stuff

the 9/11 norad tapes

the national debt chart —scaaaarrrryyyy

op-ed on presidential candidate responses to recession

rogue trader may have caused fed to cut interest rates

op-ed by caroline kennedy, endorsing barack obama—ted and patrick have now also endorsed obama

background story on obama’s church—some people seem so concerned

and for today’s bizarre story: In the U.S. south, is Canadian a new racial slur?—canadian is beautiful?

“He convicted Mr. Sosa of a double intoxication manslaughter, got a weak jury to give him 12 years in each, and then convinced Judge Wallace to stack the sentences,” Harris County assistant district attorney Mike Trent wrote in an office-wide memo. Then came the odd part: “He overcame a subversively good defence by Matt Hennessey that had some Canadians on the jury feeling sorry for the defendant and forced them to do the right thing.”
...
It is unusual that a seasoned attorney like Mr. Trent would not have wondered how a Harris County jury came to be stacked with Canadians. (There were no Canadians on the jury but there were some black members.) “The only way that there could have been Canadians on the jury, was if they were born in Canada and then became U.S. citizens, and then became citizens of the county in which the case was tried,” Mr. Vinson noted.

1930s, marihuana, and the mexican.

the other night, i caught a part of a show on… the history channel? ...concerning the history of marijuana legislation.  i was previously unaware of the racist nature of the prohibition effort.  the term “marihuana” being used to further emphasize the corollation between mexicans and ~drugs~.  that it coincided with a time that the us was attempting to rid itself of those pesky mexicans wasn’t just a coincidence.

the topic itself was interesting, but even more interesting was how much of the rhetoric used then is being used now in the current “debate” on immigration: “newly arrived foreigners were blamed for the sprawling urban slums, depressed paychecks, and labor unrest”... sound familiar?

read on for further snippets.  and stop by http://www.justiceforimmigrants.com for the debunking of several myths in relation to immigration.
