run, don’t walk, to catch coraline in theaters!

the first time i saw the trailer for coraline, i was hooked:  directed by henry selick, from “the nightmare before christmas”, based on the book by neil gaiman, with music by they might be giants… how could i NOT see it?  add to that: i love the style of the artwork involved AND a fairytale nightmare?  it’s a winner!

the story line is this:  young girl moves into new home, stumbles upon a “secret door” and discovers a parallel world, complete with an “other mother” and “other father”.  everything she could ever want seems to exist in this “other world”, only… something is amiss.  soon, coraline is forced to face down the “other mother” and win her way back to the real world.

watch the trailer:

the attention to detail within the movie is simply amazing.  in fact, i suggest watching “the biggest smallest movie ever made”:

and do NOT miss the website: www.coraline.com.  it takes awhile to load, but there’s all sorts of awesome goodies within the site, like the following:

the breakfast cereal club

“You see us as you want to see us, in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a leprechaun, a monster, a cap’n, a tiger, and a rabbit. Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Cereal Club.”

is it christmas yet?!?!

first, i lost my computer for a week (yes, a WEEK!), then my internet was out, then i ordered all the yarn i needed for the few christmas presents i was going to make and it all got to me later than i’d hoped, so now i’m crocheting like a madwoman, AND i’ve a website to do.  3.5 gifts crocheted, just 3 more to do :O hopefully, i’ll finish them this weekend.  i’d one to mail, but it’ll make it late :|  i really need to start this earlier next year :|

THIS IS INTERFERING WITH MY WOW PLAY.  i’d drop out of christmas, but the fcc chairman would clap his hands in glee:

An FCC commissioner has stated that video game “addiction,” especially to World of Warcraft, is a “leading cause” of college dropouts. (Nevermind that 90% of the people diagnosed with “video game addiction” don’t have any such condition, even according to the crazily broad definition used by its proponents).

With the explosion of educational resources available online, one might think parents would be 100% pleased with the internet’s role in their children’s lives. But surveys show just the opposite: a late 2006 survey that showed 59% of parents think the internet has been a totally positive influence in their children’s lives—down from 67% in 2004.

You might find it alarming that one of the top reasons for college drop-outs in the U.S. is online gaming addiction - such as World of Warcraft - which is played by 11 million individuals worldwide.

of course, having all this to do has helped me catch up on a few movies… crocheting is always faster to do if i have something to watch!  i recommend both of these movies:

and now, back to yarn balls :o

don’t miss these documentaries

torturing democracy is available at http://torturingdemocracy.org/

taxi to the dark side - the latest prize-winning documentary from Oscar-nominee Alex Gibney, confirms his standing as one of the foremost non-fiction filmmakers working today. A stunning inquiry into the suspicious death of an Afghani taxi driver at Bagram air base in 2002, the film is a fastidiously assembled, uncommonly well-researched examination of how an innocent civilian was apprehended, imprisoned, tortured, and ultimately murdered by the greatest democracy on earth. Intermingling documents and records of the incident with candid testimony from eyewitnesses and participants, the film uncovers an inescapable link between the tragic incidents that unfolded in Bagram and the policies made at the very highest level of the United States government in Washington, D.C. Combining the cool detachment of a forensic expert with the heated indignation of a proud American who holds his country to a high standard, Gibney’s film reveals how the Bush administration has systematically betrayed the very ideals it professes to uphold.
