hot linking from free republic, ew?

first, for anyone who doesn’t know… “hot-linking” is when someone uses a link to an image that is saved on another website instead of saving a copy of the image on the website that the picture will be shown on. ( - from wikipedia).  so for example, another website linking directly to an image that’s on my website, instead of saving the image to their website and then using it.  it’s called bandwidth theft and it upsets a great many website owners.  me, i don’t really care, for the most part.

but…

a funny thing happened on the way to checking my stats.  nestled among referring sites was this link to free republic.  free republic being filled with conservative blunderheads…  the type that keeps worldnutdaily in business.  sure enough, upon visiting the link, i found none other than a happy bunny “no sucky losers allowed” image, linked directly from my site, gracing it’s pages (a poster had used it in a reply to the story “Even By Trial Lawyer Standards, Edwards A Real Sleazebag”).

this is the actual post that the image was in.  if you click on it, you can see the entire page.

so i decided to have a bit of fun smile  i created an entirely ~new~ image and replaced the image they were using with it smile  here’s the after smile

ahhh.  sometimes, life IS good smile

bye bye usenets?

expect to see more and more of this type of thing occurring, as the war on pirating continues to heat up.  there are those who will not be satisfied until they have reshaped the internet destroying the openness and freedom found there completely.

from alt.blocked: Verizon blocks access to whole USENET hierarchy:

Verizon has released details of the agreement it and other ISPs signed last week to block access to Usenet groups that have been caught trafficking child pornography. Instead of simply blocking the handful of offending groups, however, Verizon has decided to enforce a blanket ban on what could be tens of thousands of completely innocent groups.
...
The banned hierarchies include alt.*, a hierarchy known to be a haven for trading many forms of copyrighted media (fonts, wares, movies, TV shows, music, porn—you name it, it’s there) and, of course, the child pornography Cuomo’s office is after. alt.* and the other groups Verizon will censor are also home to plenty of harmless discussion groups, such as alt.tv.simpsons, alt.fan, alt.religion, and more. While Ars Technica commends the crusade against child pornography, ISPs agreeing to wipe a whole Usenet hierarchy off the digital map seems too much like using a sledgehammer to strike a nail.

lolcats, longcats, jesus christ, it’s a lion!!!

from parenthetically speaking, by way of stupidevilbastard:

We Are Freaks

Try this little experiment. Pick a public place, a grocery store, a bar, maybe a mall. Stand there with a clip board and ask random strangers what their favorite lolcat is. Ask them if they know that longcat is looonnnggg. See if they know who Anonymous is locked in battle against.

We have this weird disconnect with the world these days. The internet has provided us with such a detailed method of social interaction and we have formed amazing communities around it. Places where we interact with hundreds, even thousands of people. We spend so much time there, that it’s easy to forget that most of the people around us in real life, well, don’t.

And when we starts saying things like “Jesus Christ, it’s a lion, get in the car”, they just sort of stare at us blankly. It’s a situation I’ve become adjusted to and even enjoy. I like those blank stares. I like being in on the joke, no matter how stupid the joke may be.

—all ur freaknesses are belong to me! (along with all these other “rogue punchlines”)

yeah.

“You Are My People”.

aww, arin’s first computer

... is an internet computer museum relic ;o

The Victor 9000 / Sirius S1 was conceived by Chuck Peddle who also designed the first Commodore PETs. This machine was quite innovative and superior in many points to the original IBM PC. It met a certain success in Europe as the IBM PC was not yet available there, whereas the Sirius S1 (european name of the Victor 9000) was. ACT sold a lot of these systems in UK, and their first “homemade” computer, the Apricot PC, borrowed a lot to the Sirius S1.

The mechanical keyboard is very complete and has its own 8035 cpu. The 12’’ monochrome monitor is equiped with an anti-relflection filter and can be adjusted horizontaly and verticaly. Contrast and luminosity are controlled directly from the keyboard. The computer can display text ranging from 80 x 25 to 132 x 50. But the best feature is the high resolution reaching 800 x 400 pixels!

The Victor 9000 is equiped with a Codec which can sample and replay sounds in telephone quality. There are two V24 / RS232 ports and one parallel connector which can also be used as an IEEE-488 interface (to connect measurement instruments for example). There is also an optional light-pen, which is in fact a touch pen using resistive mesh on the CRT.

The two 5.25” disk-drives are single-sided and offer 600 kb each. But double-sided models were available as an option and offered 1.2 Mb each.
The Victor 9000 was perhaps best known for how it was able to achieve such high density on it’s floppy disks. It used variable speed disk drives; there were 9 different speeds used. As the drive head moved outward the speed would increase. It was really neat to hear the speed change as the drive head moved.

The Victor 9000 could run with MS-DOS or CP/M 86. Many languages were available: Basic 86, C-Basic, Cobol, CIS-Cobol, Pascal, Fortran, PL1, PLM, etc.; as well as some software: Wordstar, Spellstar, Mailmerge, Multiplan, etc.
