need to make stuff!!!

now that my house is beginning to feel like normal again (everything is unboxed, i just need to give the upstairs a thorough cleaning) and having just gotten my craft room organized again… i am ~compelled~ to make stuff.  long ages ago, i used to have a subscription to craft magazine and i’d forgotten how much i really enjoyed it.  but guess what?  they have a blog!  woohoo!  i have a feeling that i’ll wind up re-subscribing, but there are a few sites, as well as their’s, on DIY crafts that should keep me knee deep in ideas.

this is the face of modern conservatism.

This is where rightwing radio, conservative talk shows, conservative politicians and preachers brings us to.  This is the end result of conservatism.

Police: Man shot churchgoers over liberal views

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - An out-of-work truck driver accused of opening fire at a Unitarian church, killing two people, left behind a note suggesting that he targeted the congregation out of hatred for its liberal policies, including its acceptance of gays, authorities said Monday.

A four-page letter found in Jim D. Adkisson’s small SUV indicated he intentionally targeted the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church because, the police chief said, “he hated the liberal movement” and was upset with “liberals in general as well as gays.”

Adkisson was a loner who hates “blacks, gays and anyone different from him,” longtime acquaintance Carol Smallwood of Alice, Texas, told the Knoxville News Sentinel.

Adkisson “stated that he had targeted the church because of its liberal teachings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were ruining the country, and that he felt that the Democrats had tied his country’s hands in the war on terror and they had ruined every institution in America with the aid of the major media outlets,” Investigator Steve Still wrote.

Parkey’s wife, Amy Broyles, was visiting the church to see her daughter in the play. She said Adkisson “was a man who was hurt in the world and feeling that nothing was going his way,” she said. “He turned the gun on people who were mostly likely to treat him lovingly and compassionately and be the ones to help someone in that situation.”

People like Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson, James Dobson, Jesse Helms… this is where you’ve brought us.  Or, like Michael Savage:

Savage on autism: “A fraud, a racket. ... In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out”

On his nationally syndicated radio show, Michael Savage claimed that autism is “[a] fraud, a racket. ... I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they’re silent? They don’t have a father around to tell them, ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’ “

He also stated that the ongoing asthma epidemic is “a money racket” staged by “the minority community” to get “extra welfare.” Here’s how the racket works, according to the hatemonger Savage: “When the nurse looks at you, you go [fake cough], ‘I don’t know, the dust got me.’ See, everyone had asthma from the minority community.”

absolutists are ~wrong~!  unless i’m one of them, hey?

there seems to be three camps of people: the right and their “you’re either with us or against us”, the left and their “you’re either with us or against us”, and then there is the other camp… the “rationalists” who decry the absolutism of the right and left and their “with us or against us”, while stating that you’re either with them.. or against them.

therefore “with me or against me” isn’t the issue, but the degree to which you can tolerate ideas that are in direct opposition to your own.  i can tolerate any number of ideas, but at this very moment, i’m not open to considering a good many of them.  it happens every now and again.  god, guns, gays, abortion, immigration, healthcare, this bizarre idiotic notion that capitalism is The Way and the only way… pfft.  yes, pfft, i say.  with a capital PFFT.  :|

if it offends anyone, my apologies.  we all go through phases, this is one of mine.

war is a failure.

i have no real point with this post, other than “war is a failure” came up in a conversation, which then led me on a rather rambling trip through the internet.  most interesting site of the day: history is a weapon - really very interesting site.

i still adhere to the idea that war represents failure.  that we, as a species, are lazy.  we look to militaristic solutions, violence, aggression, rather than utilizing imagination and creativity to come up with alternatives.  the framing isn’t “violence” vs “do nothing”, there are other alternatives many times.  tho sometimes, doing nothing is one of the most effective things you can do.  not the easiest, but the most effective.  bullies bully precisely because they want a reaction from their chosen victim.  they want that power.  the power to make their chosen victim react.  sometimes the most effective means in dealing with a bully?  stand there and don’t react.  take the wind out of their sails.  not much fun to pick on someone who just looks at them.  will that work in ever bullying situation?  of course not.  each situation requires it’s own solution.

things which caught my attention…
